The Municipality of San Mango sul Calore is located within the area of the Calore Valley. It's a village with 1,157 inhabitants, located 470 metres above sea level, at 19 km from Avellino. The territory extends for 14.59 sq km and the adjoining municipalities are: Castelvetere sul Calore, Chiusano di San Domenico, Lapio, Luogosano and Paternopoli.
The etymology of the name comes from the name of an ancient church dedicated to San Magno, a term later changed to “San Mango”, while the addition of the specific “sul Calore” is a clear reference to the area in which the municipality is found. The inhabitants are called Sammanghesi and Saint Theodore of Amasea is their patron saint.

HISTORICAL NOTES
The first settlements in San Mango sul Calore date back, most likely, to the late Roman era, as evidenced by the presence of Hannibal’s Bridge.
Only in medieval times, the foundations were laid for the construction of the current village which, in later times, was administered by several families, including the Malgario, Filangieri, Caracciolo, Mastrogiudice, D’Amore and Fornelli families.
Located in an area with a high seismic risk, San Mango sul Calore was seriously damaged during the earthquakes of 1930 and 1980 that modified, in large part, the ancient physiognomy of the village, without however affecting its charm.
As if suspended in time by the sound of trumpets and a drum roll, under a colourful shower of flowers and sugared almonds, with horses trotting through the streets of the centre, San Mango sul Calore is pure emotion
