Campobasso Palace, also known as the “Baronial Palace”, is a site of historical interest situated in Via Attilio Damiani, in Pietrastornina.
From the date 1614 engraved on the coat of arms above the portal, we can assume that the noble residence was constructed earlier than the first decade of the 17th century, and was commissioned by Ugone Pagano who inherited the fief from its first baron, Cesare. The residence then passed to the Lottieri d’Aquino family and in 1745 was recorded as a residence of the Principe della Pietra. However, 30 years later, it was recorded as the property of a wealthy local landowner, Gaetano De Luca di Giovanbattista. Upon his death, the ownership of the building was split among his heirs, who also built a new entrance facing Via Damiani.
In the 1920s, part of the Palace was occupied by the local command of the Carabinieri, but in 1925 a disastrous flood destroyed the southern wing, which stands above the San Martino river. In 1973 much of the building was purchased by the current owners, who commissioned a refurbishment in the 1980s.
Although the most recent works have altered much of its original aspect, Campobasso Palace is still one of the principal places of interest in this Irpinian town.
