The Church of the Madonna del Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary) is located on Piazza Freconia, in the historic centre of the town of Taurano in Irpinia.
Originally bearing the name “Ecclesia”, it is owned by the Congregation of the Rosary, which was established on 27 October, 1576. The religious building dates back to the 16th century and has a typically Baroque style, although traces of a previous church dedicated to Saint Leonard can still be seen today.
A double flight staircase of limestone steps leads to the front façade of the sacred building from the square below. A stone doorway, an aedicule, and two glass windows embellish the façade, beautiful in its simplicity. The interior of the Church has a single nave, with a baroque altar in polychrome marble at the end, surmounted by a wooden altarpiece depicting Our Lady of the Rosary with Child, positioned high on a half moon, with the Saints Catherine, Dominic, Francis, and Mary Magdalene. The sacred space is embellished by an imposing gilded wooden organ, dating from 1763 to 1773, in the style of Vaccaro, the canvases in the side chapels, one of which is attributed to Mozzillo, the wonderful ceiling painted by Pasquale Vecchione, and the magnificent carved walnut wood panelling, in neoclassical style, in the sacristy.
A place very dear to the Taurano community, the Church of the Madonna del Rosario helps bring the space below on Piazza Freconia to life, as the setting of and witness to countless events in the town's history.
