The Aragonese Tower is a site of historic interest in the old centre of Pietradefusi.
It takes its name from the dukes Acquaviva d’Aragona, who administered the fief of Pietradefusi from the 15th until the 17th century. The Tower was actually constructed by the nobleman Giacomo de Tocco, who in 1431 ordered it to be built at the highest point of the town, around which the existing historic centre sprang up.
Standing approximately 11 m tall, the Aragonese Tower was a lookout point on the left bank of the river Calore, and over the years it has also been a gathering point for the local people in the case of invasion or sackings, a collection point for feudal taxes, and a noble fortress. Today, all that remains of the original rectangular structure are the foundations, which stand on bare rock. The recent restoration works have created a three-storey castle with spacious interiors and an outside area also used for events, exhibitions and gatherings.
History and architecture have been skilfully preserved at this memorable site, which symbolises the past of Pietradefusi, providing insight not only into the ancient culture but also offering a breathtaking view of the surrounding hills.
