Chiesa di S. Maria degli Angeli di San Mango sul Calore

The Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli (Saint Mary of the Angels) in San Mango sul Calore is located on Piazza San Teodoro, in the historic centre of the Irpinian village. 

It was built after the earthquake of 23 November, 1980, in the highest part of the town. Its distinctive façade is punctuated by bush-hammered travertine slabs, creating a rhythmic alternation of light and dark lines. To the side, a bell tower rises to a height of 20 metres. On the large square in front, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the valley below from the parapet, thanks to the modern building's favourable position.

With a square floor plan, the Church has simple but strong walls made of stone and dedicated to the four Evangelists. At the top, a triangle made of laminated wood symbolises the Holy Trinity. The wood and stone used in the modern interior design were chosen to give the sacred place light and lightness. Finally, a large arch on the axis of the altar establishes a dialogue between the external environment of the square in front and the interior space.

Along with the Church of Sant'Anna, known for the "Cavalcata" festival at the end of July in honour of its patron Saint Anna, the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli is the symbol of the San Mango community's ever-renewed devotion.
