The Church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo (Saint Bartholomew the Apostle) of Vallata is located in Via Piazza di Sopra, in the historic centre of the town.
Known as the Mother Church, it was probably built during the year one thousand and consecrated on 5 February, with the officiating of the first class of the numerous receptive clergy. Reconsecrated after a war in 1499 and subject to further restoration work in 1568, 1785 and 1903, it was considerably damaged by the 1930 earthquake, which made it necessary to demolish the bell tower.
Today, the religious building has a new bell tower and an ancient entrance portal. The façade is distinguished by a polychrome glass rose window depicting Saint Mary of the Assumption into Heaven. The other windows of the Mother Church are also made with the same glass technique and illustrate various scenes from the Bible. Inside, the typically Gothic features of the building have been lost due to numerous restorations, while the nave and two aisles with flat ceilings and pillars, in Romanesque style, have remained intact to this day.
A religious symbol of the Vallata community, the Church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo is famous for the fact that it still houses a painting attributed to the Emilian artist Giovanni Lanfranco (1582-1647), depicting the martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew and donated by Cardinal Orsini to the parish.
