Chiesa di San Marciano

The Church of San Marciano (Saint Marcian) is a place of worship located in Frigento, along the road leading to the entrance to the historic centre of the Irpinian town.

Dedicated to the patron saint of the community of Frigento, the current structure of the Church is thought to date back to the 18th century, although the materials used, dating from Roman times, suggest that the building is much older. Attested by written sources as early as 754, the Church of San Marciano is in fact connected to older structures, discovered thanks to archaeological investigations carried out in the nearby gardens of the middle school. These investigations attest to the existence of an ancient place of worship, built in an area of necropolis and burials of Lombard freemen found with weapons.

Inside the Church of San Marciano, the viewer's gaze lingers on the beautiful painting of Saint Marcian on the high altar. Important fragments of classical monumental inscriptions are also visible, which must have housed bronze letters and various votive offerings, donated in recognition of the patron saint's miracles on behalf of the sick and obsessed.

On the outside of the building, on the external wall facing the Church gardens, it is possible to contemplate the ancient stone statuette, placed in its current location after restoration work following the 1980 earthquake.

A place where history and faith come together in symbiosis, the Church of San Marciano is one of the oldest emblems attesting to the local community's worship of its patron saint.
