Chiesa di San Trifone Martire

The Church of San Trifone Martire (Saint Tryphon Martyr) is a place of worship located in Marzano di Nola, in the town’s historic centre.

Built in the first half of the 18th century, in the clearly Campanian late Baroque style, the Church is dedicated to the patron saint of Marzano. It was constructed thanks to the work of the parish priest Don Venanzio della Pietra, who was killed in the tragic massacre in Marzano di Nola on 26 April 1799; the action by French troops came in response to the anti-republican sentiment harboured by most of the local population. 

The Church has been restored several times over the years, most recently in 1992. It is noted for its variety of sacred furnishings and for the 18th-century varicoloured wooden statues of the Immaculate Conception, Saint Joseph, the Ecce Homo and other sacred figures including the patron saint. 
The wall paintings are also noteworthy and include Salvatore Caliendo’s Four Evangelists in the crests of the cupola. On the ceiling is a large painting dating from the 18th century, depicting the martyrdom and glory of Saint Tryphon. It was repainted by Caliendo on the basis of the pre-existing work.  
Finally, the large crucifix at the foot of the high altar was crafted by the sculptor Domenico Castaldo, from Marzano. Like the other altars, this one is painted with scenes depicting saints and archangels.

A clear example of Baroque art, the Church of San Trifone Martire is a beautiful building, much cherished by the local community.
