The Mother Church of Santo Stefano del Sole (Saint Stephen of the Sun), also known as the Church of Santo Stefano is located close to the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Piazza del Sole.
The construction work began in the 17th century and ended in 1605, but the building was later extended in 1716 with embellishments that also included the space outside the entrance door, in what is now Piazza del Sole. Also dating from a later period are the hexagonal bell tower built to the left of the Church of Santo Stefano, and the cupola, whose construction started in 1760.
Today, this church has a simple structure with a large staircase made from white Irpinian stone. Inside the Mother Church, visitors can admire many features including a ceiling fresco depicting the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, more Neapolitan paintings on the sides of the nave and on the altars, a statue of Saint Stephen on the right-hand altar and a statue of Saint Vitus on the left: tradition has it that they originate from Sorbo Serpico.
Finally, visitors will certainly notice the three ancient linden trees in the Piazza, welcoming the worshippers and visitors.
