The Pietra dei Matrimoni Civili (Civil Marriage Stone) is a place of interest located in Teora, in Largo Europa, so called because a chapel of the same name used to stand there.
It is a stone table, consisting of two pillars with a travertine slab on top one meter long, 20 cm thick, and 80 cm wide and with a small hollow at the height of the centre, on which important public deeds were drawn up and civil marriage rites conducted.
In the past, weddings were held outdoors, in public, and in the shade of a lime tree that used to grow in this square. The words the spouses said as they exchanged their vows in this ritual have been handed down to the present day.
