The Sanctuary of San Silvestro Papa (Saint Sylvester Pope) is a place of worship located in the Monte San Silvestro area in Sant'Angelo a Scala.
Perched on a 900-meter-high rock spur, this religious building can be reached via two paths: the first, also known as the "Path of Devotion", is a route that begins in Summonte and ends at the Sanctuary, passing through a majestic chestnut grove; the second, about 4 km, starts from the town, arriving at the final destination after a journey of around 3 hours. Once you arrive at the summit, you can access the square through a limestone archway.
The religious building has a white stone façade, flanked by a bell tower; the elegant, finely carved doorway is also made of stone. Inside, there is a bronze bell that is rung by all those who manage to climb the path and reach the sanctuary. Inside a cave, to the side of the small church, flows the spring for which this place is so famous: according to popular tradition, its waters have therapeutic and miraculous properties. Even today, many of the faithful come to the spring to bathe in the miraculous water, leaving requests for graces and personal affections as a sign of devotion. The cave is covered with prayers and supplications and for centuries has fed the legend that its healing waters healed Constantine from leprosy, under the intercession of Pope Sylvester.
Known as a small and intimate shrine, as well as a miraculous place, the Sanctuary of San Silvestro Papa receives numerous pilgrims on Easter Monday every year and on the feast of the patron saint on 31 December.
