Montefusco with its ancient castle and former Bourbon prison, will be among the protagonists of the National Castle Days 2025, an event promoted by the Italian Castle Institute and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture. The initiative, now in its XXVI edition, will take place on 10 and 11 May throughout the national territory, with particular attention to the ancient fortresses of Valle del Sabato, in Irpinia.
In Campania, among the selected sites Montefusco stands out, a village rich in history and culture, together with Summonte, Mercogliano and Montefredane. Free guided tours of the historic center of the town will be organized on Sunday 11 May, with tours scheduled for 11am and 3pm. Participants will be able to discover a monumental route that includes the possibility of witnessing local artisan traditions such as bobbin lace and ceramics.
The Castrum of Montefusco has its roots in the 9th century, when the Lombards fortified the walls, transforming it into a real castle. In 1130, with Roger II, it became a "Royal Castle" due to its strategic importance and was the temporary home of popes and kings. Under the Angevins, Montefusco became the capital of the Ultra Principality, and with the Aragonese it hosted the provincial Royal Audience, also becoming a prison for civil, criminal and military crimes.
Today, the former Bourbon prison can be visited and houses a national museum divided into two sections: one dedicated to tombolo, the traditional Montefuscan lace, and a section of sacred art with finds from local churches.
