The Museum of Religious Life in Montecalvo (also known as the Museum of Saint Pompilius) is located in Montecalvo Irpino, close to the square named after the museum.
Founded on 29 December 1898, this is one of the oldest museums in Campania. It was only built thanks to the generosity of the faithful, and is housed in the birthplace of Saint Pompilius Maria Pirrotti (1710-1766). In 2001, during the reconstruction works, an ancient image of the Beautiful Mother of Abundance and other objects were found here.
Many of the items found in the Saint’s birthplace are now on display in the museum, which is home to a number of artworks, some of which came from other churches in the town. The exhibition extends over five rooms. One of the finest exhibits on display is the Statue of the Mamma Bella dell'Abbondanza (Beautiful Mother of Abundance), dating from the 16th-17th centuries, and the 17th-century portrait of Saint Pompilius.
A rich testimony of faith and love, this museum is one of the principal sites of cultural interest in Montecalvo.
