The Church of Santi Modestino, Fiorentino e Flaviano (Saints Modestinus, Florentinus and Flavianus) also known as the "Church of San Modestino", is a place of worship situated in Mercogliano.
It stands outside the town’s old boundary walls, at the end of the beautiful Viale San Modestino with its characteristic double rows of majestic plane trees. The Church is the venue for sacred celebrations in honour of Modestinus the Bishop, one of the three patron saints of Mercogliano, whose worship is shared with the faithful community of Avellino.
The most distinctive feature of the building is without a doubt the bell tower with its underpass, allowing the transit of vehicles, and the simple, linear prospect on the right-hand side. Inside there is an enchanting ceiling decorated with stucco and marble work, including a painting by the artist Angelo Mozzillo from Afragola, depicting episodes from the devastating fire of 1656 that destroyed part of the historic village. Four side chapels, paintings, statues of saints and marble altars complete the sacred furnishings of this church. Another noteworthy feature is the sacred well, which is 4 m deep and is located close to the spot where the remains of the three martyr saints were discovered. Close to the well is an old wooden confessional, still in excellent condition.
Even today, the local community is deeply connected to this church, located in the town centre.
