The Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie (Holy Mary of Graces) di Grottolella, also known as the “Church of Sant’Egidio”(Saint Giles) or the “Church of San Vincenzo” (Saint Vincent), is located in Grottolella.
It stands in the historic town centre and was built during the Norman period. The current entrance to the Church is to the south, but before the building was extended in the 18th century, the entrance was facing the Castle of Macedonio.
The gabled façade now has pilasters framing the imposing stone portal in the centre. To the right, a stone plaque tells us that in 1783 the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie housed the remains of Saint Vincent the Martyr. The religious building is flanked and enhanced by a tall bell tower on three levels. Inside, a 16th-century painting of the “Virgin of the Graces" thought to be from the Neapolitan school, hangs over the central altar. A further two marble altars with varicoloured inlays adorn the Chapels of Sant'Anastasia and San Vincenzo.
Much-cherished by the local community, the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie houses artworks and furnishings that testify to the strong devotion of the local people.
