The Mother Church of San Nicola e Sant'Anna (Saint Nicholas and Saint Anne) is a place of worship located in Savignano Irpino, in the historic centre of one of Italy's Most Beautiful Villages.
Built close to the walls of the Guevara's Castle, from which it was undoubtedly incorporated in the past, as confirmed by the coat of arms of the municipality on the central front, dating back to 1581, the religious building has an imposing bell tower, which was originally tower-shaped and was the oldest element of the Church (13th-14th century). Following the 1938 earthquake, which caused extensive damage to the entire structure, the bell tower was rebuilt with a pyramid-shaped dome.
Today, the Mother Church of San Nicola e Sant'Anna is distinguished by its late Romanesque façade, built by local stonemasons using stone from "Targiana", a village located in an area between the municipalities of Savignano Irpino and Monteleone di Puglia.
All three portals - one in the centre and two on the sides - are crowned by rosettes, while the lunette above the central portal features a majolica depicting Saint Anne, patron saint of the Savignano community.
The interior of the building is characterised by a Latin-cross structure with a nave and two aisles, where the main altar, raised above the level of the Church and made of precious marble, the columns supporting the arches of the nave and the aisles, also made of stone, the frescoes depicting the marriage between the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph and the statue of Saint Anne, dating back to the 18th century, stand out.
A place of worship of great value, set in the heart of the village, the Mother Church of San Nicola e Sant'Anna is the religious symbol of the community of Savignano Irpino.
