The Episcopal Palace of Sant'Andrea di Conza is situated in Largo Castello, and is currently the municipal hall of this Irpinian town.
The history of the building dates back to the 16th century, when the archbishops of Conza re-established their civil jurisdiction. With its unusual “C” shape, the building was constructed by the Poncelly family from France, between the late 13th and 14th centuries. Standing on a rock spur at the highest point of the historic centre, the building has been altered, embellished and extended over the years.
Although many of its architectural and decorative features have now been lost, visitors can still admire the two round towers (one at the main entrance, the other facing the panoramic view), with an inner ward and stone portal dating from the 17th century, surmounted by an archbishop’s coat of arms made from stone and a plaque with a Latin engraving. The two finest artistic works in the complex can also still be seen: the roof garden and the fountain inside it. The fountain is surrounded by a balustrade with a three-stepped terrace made entirely from local limestone. The largest central terrace is flanked by two smaller ones on each side, and bears the bishop’s coat of arms at the top.
The Episcopal Palace offers a splendid view from the garden, and is home to an open-air theatre that has a long tradition in the local community and hosts many performances.
