The Former Convent of the Dominican Friars is a historic building that is now home to the municipal seat of Montemiletto and stands next to the Church of Sant’Anna (Saint Anne) in Via Roma.
Built in the 16th century almost at the same time as the adjacent church, the convent also bore the name of Saint Anna. The ex-Convent has 50-60 cells and a School of Theology. Its structure is square, with a colonnade running along its length, decorated with frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Saint Dominic.
The principal artistic detail of the Convent is its fine cloister, dating back to the first half of the 18th century. The central section includes a water cistern made from travertine blocks. To the right of the entrance door were the guests’ quarters, while the library, study and kitchens were placed opposite the entrance. A corridor, now closed to the public, joined the monastery with the Church of Sant’Anna. Following the law abolishing religious orders, enacted at the same time as the abolition of feudalism in 1806, the Convent passed to the Municipality of Montemiletto, which still has its seat here.
An important historical testimony for the community of Montemiletto, the Former Convent of the Dominican Friars is a focal point for the cultural and administrative life of this Irpinian town.
