Melito Archeologica is the term used to define the historical-archaeological site in Melito Irpino.
The town’s Roman origins are evidenced by the discovery of archaeological remains thought to date back to the Roman-Samnite era. In the districts of Pezza, Difinsella and Ruocchi, just two kilometres from the town centre, a Roman necropolis was discovered along with a “Pompeii-style” spa complex with mosaic floor. This is also the place where the remains of an aqueduct, several houses and a small temple were discovered. To the left of the temple a headless marble wolf embracing a tree, has also been found.
This site, of particular archaeological interest, has also brought to light a series of republican and imperialist coins: glimpses of life in Melito Irpino from centuries past.
