The Sanctuary of Sant'Antonio (Saint Anthony) is a place of worship located in the historic centre of Montefalcione.
The complex initially comprised a church dedicated to Saint Mary of the Assumption, presumably built in the early 14th century. The building was converted into a sanctuary in the 1700s. Over the centuries, both the Church and the bell tower have been restored, refurbished and altered many times, mainly due to earthquakes. During the structural repairs carried out after the earthquake of 23 November 1980, parts of the stone pilasters (now incorporated into the existing columns) were unearthed and left visible, as testimony to the original Romanesque style of this religious building.
Today, the Sanctuary of Sant'Antonio is noted for its façade, flanked by the majestic bell tower, and for the bronze portal made by Aldo Melillo, a craftsman from Montefalcione. The portal displays a series of popular themes and four symbols: the Saint, the coat of arms of Montefalcione and two parchments.
Inside the complex, which has a main nave and two aisles, there are various artworks including frescoes and a chiselled silver chalice set with a disc depicting Saint Anthony.
A symbol of profound devotion, the Sanctuary of Sant'Antonio is a particularly important place of worship for the local community.
