The Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo (Saints Peter and Paul) in Morra De Sanctis is located in the historic centre of this Irpinian town, close to the Biondi Morra Castle.
Known as the Mother Church of the town, it dates back to the 11th century and has been extended and restored so many times that its original size and shape has been lost, due to the numerous earthquakes over the centuries. The most recent earthquake, on 23 November 1980, caused such serious damage that a long and painstaking 24-year restoration project was required. When the Church was reopened for worship on 1 May 2004, a huge ceremony was held, attended not only by the residents of the town but also emigrants from every corner of the world.
Today, the Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo of Morra De Sanctis has a single-nave structure with a Latin cross floor plan. The façade is enhanced by a Baroque stone portal leading inside the building. On the right-hand side of the nave is another entrance leading to the tomb of the Morra family. The notable artworks kept inside the Church include the wooden choir dating from 1796, a 17th-century painting thought to be the work of Foggian artist Vincenzo De Mita, and no fewer than eight altars.
A religious landmark for the local community, the Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo, which stands proudly in the centre of Morra De Sanctis, has now been returned to its former splendour.
