The Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli (Saint Mary of the Angels) in Montoro is situated on the outskirts of the hamlet of Torchiati.
Regarding its construction, some evidence comes from the stone plaque on the front of the building, which apparently replaced an older church that was probably destroyed. This would indicate that the present construction dates back to 1588, after the nobleman Joannes Carolus De Mastrangelo donated a plot of land.
The Church has a Latin cross floor plan, with a single-nave longitudinal arm and side chapels. The façade incorporates geometrical reliefs that are also repeated on the adjacent façade of the convent, ending in a triangular tympanum with oculus. Another notable element is the stone portal formed of two columns set on high bases, supporting a frieze surmounted by a semicircular broken pediment decorated with figurative designs. Inside, at the end of the nave, is the marble high altar and a carved, golden wooden baldachin depicting the triumph of the Blessed Virgin surrounded by the Angels, made by the Neapolitan sculptor Alfonso Postiglione.
The Church is part of a convent complex run by the Order of Friars Minor, notable for its cloister and lunette decorations depicting scenes from the life of Saint Francis of Assisi.
