Chiesa e Convento di S. Francesco di Carife

The Convent of San Francesco, which is attached to the Church of the same name, is a place of religious interest in Carife, in the Fossi district.

The earthquakes in the area, in particular, that of 29 November 1732, destroyed the entire structure, which was rebuilt in 1749. The earthquake of 23 November 1980 also caused damage to the religious complex, which was restored and reopened for worship on 17 August 2003.

After the last earthquake, the paintings, including oil paintings, of the Neapolitan school from the 18th century were recovered and restored. The organ and the wooden confessional that adorned the convent were moved to the Collegiate Church of San Giovanni Battista. After the reopening of the religious complex, Don Daniele Palumbo, parish priest of Carife, returned all the works that had been temporarily moved to the convent.

Thanks to the devotional spirit of the Carife community, the whole convent structure is still today one of the most important and cherished places in the collective memory of the town.
