The Civic Archaeological Museum of Bisaccia is housed in the remarkable setting of the Ducal Castle.
A rich collection of about 800 finds from the excavations carried out in the necropolis on the hill of Cimitero Vecchio (Old Cemetery) is displayed in chronological order in the rooms of the Castle.
Archaeological research among the 50 pit burials, from the first and second Iron Age, has brought to light a large number of finds which, carefully chosen and collected in the rooms of the Archaeological Civic Museum, allow the visitor to reconstruct the history of the territory in prehistoric and archaic times.
The burials also contained significant grave goods: numerous ceramic artefacts as well as personal ornaments in bronze, fibulae and weapons. The tombs from the first half of the 8th century BC testify to the economic and social differences of the community at that time. Jewellery, pendants, ceramics and valuable furnishings were found in the richly decorated Tomb 66, the Tomb of the Princess, with its rectangular grave and stone enclosure indicating that a noble person was buried in it.
Multimedia plays a key role in the Museum's exhibition halls, making the archaeological heritage accessible through video guides, illustrative and explanatory panels, reconstructing the early protohistoric settlement with scenes of daily life. The past meets modern times in the Civic Archaeological Museum and finds a new life thanks to it, offering visitors a fascinating journey through the history of Bisaccia.
