Cappella di S. Maria di Montevergine di Petruro Irpino

The Chapel of Santa Maria di Montevergine in Petruro Irpino is located in the Lago area, about 1 km from the historic centre.

According to some sources, it was built around 1880 by the archpriest Lucido Colantuono, at the behest of some families from Petruro Irpino, in the same spot where another place of worship previously stood. The old building had been destroyed by a disaster and the archpriest ordered some stones from it to be kept under the altar of the more recent church. 

The current structure of the chapel is plain, with stone side façades and a plastered front façade painted yellow. The large wooden door with grating is surmounted by an aedicule depicting the Madonna of Montevergine, a glass lunette, and a pediment with cornice. On the right, the church is flanked by bell-gable with a single bell, topped by a gable roof. Inside, the church has a Latin cross layout and barrel vaults; the side walls are adorned with pilasters surmounted by a continuous projecting cornice, while glazed lunettes illuminate the sacred space in the transept, the choir area, and the centre of the main façade. Against the wall at the end of the apse, the marble altar displays the portrait of the Holy Mary of Montevergine: an oil painting known as the "Madonna of the Mountain", which may have been painted by a monk from the Sanctuary of Montevergine. 

A small, charming place of worship beloved by the Petruro Irpino community, the Chapel of Santa Maria di Montevergine , along with the Church of San Bartolomeo (Saint Bartholomew), forms the artistic and religious heritage of the smallest village in Irpinia.
