The Church of the Santissima Addolorata (Our Lady of Sorrows) is located on Via Cerro, on the outskirts of the town of Santa Paolina in Irpinia.
The Church's date of construction is uncertain, but it was probably built in the early 20th century, as a gift from the heirs of Dr. Domenico Ianuario to the people of Santa Paolina, as can be seen from the stone plaque on the façade on the entablature.
Nowadays, the Church of the Santissima Addolorata is accessed via a stone doorway with wooden cladding on the inside. The façade has wainscoting of uncertain workmanship and is delimited by decorative pilasters, with capitals in Ionic style and entablature with plaster decorations, ending with a pediment with a protruding cornice, featuring a tympanum with a triangle with decorations. At the top of the roof is the bell gable.
Inside the Church there is a rectangular hall, with an apse covered by a dome; in the end wall of the apse is a niche housing the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows. This area opens with a lowered triumphal arch and is raised one step higher than the liturgical hall, which is covered by a flat ceiling. The Church is illuminated by two splayed rectangular windows decorated with historical figures, positioned symmetrically one on each side, and a third window on the entrance doorway.
A charming gem of the Irpinian town, the Church of the Santissima Addolorata is a small, but very important refuge of faith and devotion.
