Filangieri Castle, of which only a few remains can still be seen, is located in Via Roma, in the historic centre of the town of Candida.
Built in Norman times on a rock spur at the topmost point of the town, the ruins of the existing building pre-date 1418, the year in which the noble residence was half-destroyed in a terrifying fire started by the troops of Filippo Filangieri, after which the fortified residence was definitively abandoned. During the 15th century, Filangieri Palace – a Renaissance building now incorporated into private homes - was constructed on what remained of the original structure. Of the Castle, which had a trapezoidal floor plan, long sections of the curtain walls with their gently sloping base can still be seen today. Also visible are the remains of the four quadrangular towers at the corners of the fortress; visitors can enter by climbing the staircase at the side of the building.
Thanks to this small number of valuable remains, the Castle is, even today, testimony to the presence of the aristocratic Filangieri family in the town.
