The ruins of the Church of Sant’Egidio (Saint Giles) are what remains of the religious building located in the deserted village of Melito Vecchia, in the Municipality of Melito Irpino.
Located close to the ruins of the Castle, the church was also abandoned after the 1962 earthquake, which left it unfit for use. Nevertheless, the Church’s stone façade and bell tower are still in good condition. Although they are not open to visitors, the building still adds charm and beauty to Melito Vecchia.
The Church of Sant'Egidio and the hill fort of Melito are symbols of a significant past, whose roots lie in Roman times but have withstood the elements and the passing of the years through to the present day.
