Il Trappeto is a site of historic interest located in Via Dietro Carmine, Montecalvo Irpino.
The site is all that remains of the ancient village, of which little is known for certain, as no detailed studies of the local area have yet been done. However, the presence of the “cave homes” would indicate that the village was probably built during the Neolithic period or even the Late Stone Age. After a long period of abandonment, the homes cut out of the Trappeto sandstone were again inhabited during the Middle Ages. With the rise of Christianity, the first rock churches were built alongside them.
The cave homes were arranged on multiple levels. Each house had a façade and front room, which people built from the materials they could find while excavating the cave. The ancient cave homes of Trappeto have long stood in silence. But for many years they were occupied, until the 1950s when their inhabitants began to emigrate.
Today, the Trappeto bears witness to the living conditions of men and women from days gone by, and to the presence of humans in this part of the world even before the community of Montecalvo Irpino was established.
