The Municipality of Capriglia Irpina is located within the area of the Partenio Park. It's a town with 2,404 inhabitants, located 575 metres above sea level, at 7 km from Avellino. The territory extends for 7.49 sq km and the adjoining municipalities are: Avellino, Grottolella, Sant’Angelo a Scala and Summonte.
The etymology of the name is said to be linked to the aristocratic Capriolo family, who lived in Capriglia until the 18th century. The inhabitants are called Caprigliesi and Saint Nicholas of Bari is their patron saint.

HISTORICAL NOTES

The origin of Capriglia Irpina is rather uncertain, although it is assumed to be particularly ancient. The various archaeological finds in the localities of Soprappiano and Ischia, in addition to the necropolis, the rustic villas and other objects found inside some tombs, suggest that one can be certain of human presence at the time of Christ and a relationship between the events of Capriglia with those of nearby Abellinum (in the territory of today’s Atripalda).
The town was a fief of several powerful families of the Kingdom of Naples: the Carafa, the Caracciolo (former princes of Avellino) and the Schipani families. The latter, in 1738, ceded it to the Marquis of Arneto who died without male children and, for this reason, the town was acquired in 1780 by Nicola Macedonio, who had the Lordship with the title of Marquis and to whose family it belonged, until the abolition of feudal rights, in 1806.

The Capriglia Irpina that you do not expect, with its moments of community and immersion in the local identity is ready to offer a unique and authentic experience
