Local traditions

From 20th and 22nd September, the village of Paternopoli will be the stage for ‘La Macenata’, an event that celebrates one of the oldest traditions of the grape harvest: the pressing of grapes with the feet. A ritual that has its roots in peasant history and that, for two days, will involve residents and visitors in an authentic experience, made of history, culture and conviviality. The event offers the unique opportunity to observe and participate in the pressing of grapes in traditional wooden vats, an ancient ritual that unites people of all ages in a moment of celebration and sharing.

In addition to the pressing, ‘La Macenata’ offers a wide range of activities that enrich the program. Tastings of fine local wines, food stands with typical specialties of Irpinia cuisine and shows of popular music and dance will help make the event an unmissable appointment for those who love food and wine culture and tradition.

The ‘macenatori’ during the pressing will also be accompanied by the engaging music of the itinerant tarantellas. On Friday 20 September, the rhythm of tradition will be marked by the ‘Virtuosi della Tarantella’, while on Saturday 21, the ancient ritual of pressing will be accompanied by the overwhelming notes of musical groups that celebrate this typical dance of peasant culture.

On Friday 20 September, starting at 7:00 pm, Piazza Rua delle Rose will host the AperitiVino, an opportunity to taste local white wines accompanied by the musical selection of Just Real Spanky Selecta. The evening will continue with the opening of the food stands and cellars, while popular music groups such as ‘Melodia Irpina’ will perform on stage. The highlight of the evening will be at 9:30 pm with the first grape pressing session, which will be held at the Frantoio Famiglietti. Afterwards, other musical performances will liven up the streets of the village until late at night.

On Saturday 21 September, the day will begin at 10.00 with an Enotour, a tour of the cellars of Paternopoli to discover the secrets of local wine production. In the afternoon, starting at 19.00, you can attend the tasting at sunset in the suggestive setting of Vico Storto, while popular music will continue to liven up the party with groups such as ‘Orizzonti Popolari’ and ‘Doggy Style’. The evening will end with a DJ set at midnight, again in Piazzetta San Vito, to end two days of traditions and fun in style.

Another great protagonist of the event will be wine. Enthusiasts will have the opportunity to participate in guided tastings of fine local wines, such as the famous Taurasi, which will be the focus of events such as ‘Evoluzioni: dal rosé al Taurasi’, scheduled for Friday evening, and ‘Declinazioni: Taurasi di Paternopoli’, scheduled for Saturday 21, at 21.30.
