Montella Chestnut PGI Festival is a food and wine event held in Montella during the autumn.
The Montella Chestnut Festival is one of the most keenly-awaited local festivals in Irpinia. Each year, it attracts large numbers of visitors also from outside the region of Campania. The first edition was held in 1977 in celebration of the tasty nut considered one of the finest of its kind in Italy. The Montella Chestnut received DOC (controlled denomination of origin) status in 1987, followed nine years later by the PGI (protected geographical indication) awarded by the EU Commission. It is of course the main attraction at the Festival, and features in many dishes and recipes from this area.
The Festival is not just a food and wine festival: it also offers visitors the chance to enjoy concerts, shows and conventions, or to visit exhibitions and discover the narrow, twisting streets of the town.
