The Church of the Santi Nomi di Gesù e Maria (Holy Names of Jesus and Mary) is a place of worship situated in Piazza Francesco Amatucci, Sorbo Serpico.
Also known by the name “Church of Santa Maria della Neve" (Saint Mary of the Snow), its origins are uncertain as few records remain, which makes it difficult to determine the exact period of construction. The first historical mention of the Church dates back to 1 January 1626, when one Giuseppe Titomanlio took possession of the Parish Mother Church. Over the centuries, the main place of worship of this Irpinian village has been rebuilt and extended several times mainly due to earthquakes in the local area.
The Church now has a yellow-plastered Baroque façade, simply decorated with white pilasters topped by embellished capitals. The village clock and medallion depicting the Virgin and Christ stand atop the striking and imposing stone portal, which is particularly noteworthy and adds understated decoration to the aspect, which reflects the linear interior design. The interior of the Church is characterised by gilded motifs on the mouldings and a ceiling with octagonal coffers, inlays and decorations. Several of the sacred furnishings are dedicated to the glorious times during the history of this Church; examples include the wooden altar by Cosimo Fanzago (1591-1678), decorated by pillars with gold-worked capitals, cherubs and angels; frescoes by Francesco Solimena (1657-1747) and varicoloured statues, probably from the 18th or 19th century.
A religious landmark for the local community, the Church of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary has an imposing aspect and dominates the main square of this Irpinian village.
