Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta

The Church of S. Maria Assunta (Saint Mary of the Assumption) is located in Largo Campanile, and is also the Mother Church of Flumeri. 

Built in the 17th century, the Church was completely destroyed in the 1930 earthquake. The existing building was reconstructed on the ruins, and has the typical features of neo-Gothic architecture. It was reopened to worshippers in 1932.

The façade consists of a single entrance in the centre, with a concrete portal consisting of two arches housing the figure of Mary and the Infant Jesus. The figure of Mary is surmounted by a centrally positioned rose, also made from concrete, with two side alcoves, inside which are angels. A series of mouldings and plasterwork crenellations decorate the upper part of the façade, which is flanked to the right by a parallelepiped bell tower with a bell chamber open on all four sides. On the fore part of the bell tower there is an octagonal clock.

Inside, the main nave of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta has a rectangular floor plan comprising three sections with cross-shaped vaults; two marble-dressed pillars mark out the side walls of the nave. Some of the sacred furnishings were recovered during the demolition of the original church and can still be seen today, such as the two decorative altars and 18th-century marble pulpit, the paintings, statues and the mediaeval baptismal font to the left of the entrance. There is also the tomb of a Bishop of Lacedonia, dating from the early 16th century.

The earthquake of 1980 did not spare the Mother Church, which has again been restored. Most of the subsequent works were carried out on the interior of the Church, which is much-cherished by the local community.
