The Church of Santa Maria Assunta (Saint Mary of the Assumption) in Lioni is located in Piazza della Vittoria, near the town hall.
Known as the oldest place of worship in the Lioni area, it was probably built on the remains of a 15th-century building. Severely damaged by the earthquake of 1980, and before that by the one of 1694, it was then rebuilt, but the bell tower, which has survived to the present day, seems to be an original artefact, which was not only used as a bell tower but was also placed to defend the door of the Church.
On the façade of the religious building, considered the Mother Church by the town's community, there is a portal in local stone with Baroque workmanship that rests on a wide staircase. Inside, however, there is a structure with nave and two aisles, in which one can admire, in particular, a baptismal font with inlaid marble and a stone sculpture from the 1500s depicting Saint Michael the Archangel.
A historical-religious symbol of the local community, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta still resists the elements and natural disasters, thanks to the commitment and devotion of the citizens of Lioni in keeping this emblematic place of worship alive.
