The Caves of Migliano are a place of historic interest in Scampitella.
Situated on a hillside close to the river Calaggio, this archaeological site was discovered accidentally during excavations in 2002. It consists of seven grain stores, known as the “Grotte dei Briganti” (Brigands’ Caves), and are thought to date from the period of Constantine the Great (274-337). Other smaller furrows were found in the same location, together with the ruins of a Roman villa dating from the 1st-2nd century AD
The Caves of Migliano are a series of austere rooms situated in different parts of the same locality. Some were dug out of the sandstone, others from limestone, and they also contain pieces of prehistoric ceramics. The remains of the Roman villa, a small part of which can still be seen above ground, are thought to belong to a previous Samnite construction, because of the many finds dating from that period. The terraced structure stands in a panoramic position on a slope, with the Cicala valley on one side and the valley of the river Calaggio on the other.
As a site of great archaeological, historical and cultural interest for the local community, the caves testify to the presence of settlements in this area from as early as Roman times.
