Teatro Carlo Gesualdo

The Teatro comunale "Carlo Gesualdo" (municipal theatre "Carlo Gesualdo") is located in Avellino, in Piazza Castello, and is entitled to the great madrigalist (1560-1613) who was the prince of Venosa, count of Conza and lord of Gesualdo.

The idea of a theatre in the county seat of Irpinia arose after the earthquake of the 23rd of November 1980, thanks to the possibility to address part of the funds for rebuilding to the development of the city. The building, designed by architects Carlo Aymonino and Gianmichele Aurigemma, was started in 1992 and ended nine years later, in 2001. 
At its inauguration the following year, Mozart's opera "The Marriage of Figaro" was staged. Also the president of the republic of the time, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, attended. During the various theatre seasons, the stage of the Teatro Carlo Gesualdo has hosted famous actors (Gigi Proietti, Massimo Ranieri, Vincenzo Salemme, Monica Guerritore, Christian De Sica, Alessandro Siani, Michele Placido, Stefano Accorsi and many others), singers (among which: Fiorella Mannoia, Luca Carboni, Francesco Renga), and theatre and dance companies, both of national and international relevance. The theatre of Irpinia's county seat also hosted the three day auditions of the renowned TV show "Italia's Got Talent".

The Teatro Carlo Gesualdo, with its futuristic structure, can welcome 1.200 spectators, and it has one of the most modern and equipped stages in Europe. Moreover, it has been recognized as one of the best recently built theatres in Italy from an acoustic point of view. Functionality and modernity are the main advantages of the theatre, that has large waiting areas and a very elegant and sober hall. Today, the management of the structure is entrusted to Teatro Pubblico Campano, a body that, in the past, has also managed the organization and definition of the theatre season program.
