Ferragosto (Midsummer) in Castelluccia is a sacred, historical and folkloric event that takes place every year during the summer in the village of the same name in the Municipality of Solofra.
The event retraces the cult in honour of Saint Mary Assumed into Heaven. This ancient ritual, initially celebrated at the Parish Church of Sant'Angelo e Santa Maria, in the same square where the Collegiate Church of San Michele Arcangelo stands today, was moved to the Sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin, located in Castelluccia: hence the name of the celebrations, which bring together many worshippers not only from the Solofra community but also from other neighbouring towns and villages.
Over time, Ferragosto in Castelluccia has mainly maintained its religious programme, which starts at the beginning of August with the solemn novenary, which is accompanied by a triduum in the days immediately preceding the feast.
On 15 August, the Solemnity of Our Lady of the Assumption is celebrated, marked by the midnight Mass and religious services throughout the day. The procession and closing Mass take place in the evening. In addition to the Marian celebrations, the programme also includes a number of popular musical performances, including the Castelluccia band, as well as tastings of typical dishes and products at the local wineries.
A centuries-old tradition of great importance to the entire local community, Ferragosto in Castelluccia is a perfect combination of nature, religion and folklore.
