The Church of San Leone Magno (Saint Leo the Great) is situated in the street also named after the patron saint of Cairano, in a little square edged by the Belvedere, Mazzeo Palace and the ruins of the old village just a short distance from the Church of the SS. Immacolata Concezione (Immaculate Conception).
The Church, which stands opposite the War Memorial, was built in the second half of the 18th century. It has a simple façade, a single-nave floor plan and an attractive altar made from varicoloured marble. It stands in a small square, which is now bordered by the Belvedere, Mazzeo Palace and the ruins of the old village.
Today, the Church of San Leone Magno still bears witness to the local community’s strong devotion to their patron saint. During the celebration of the town’s patron saint, there is a procession through the town starting from the Church of San Martino Vescovo (Saint Martin of Tours) and proceeding through every street in the village including Via San Leone, the final leg of the journey, before returning to the Mother Church.
A symbol of tradition and faith, the location of the Church of San Leone Magno gives visitors the opportunity to admire the beautiful panoramic view of the valley below.
