The seat of the Irpino Museum is in the monumental complex of the Bourbon Prison of Avellino.
The Museum hosts different sections and the repertoire present within the monumental complex is divided into several levels: on the ground floor it's possible to visit two exhibition halls, the Risorgimento section, the deposit and the lapidary; on the first floor there's the Irpinia section which, since 2019, has been hosting the new exhibition path “ Irpinia. Memory and Evolution”, guide to the historical and cultural evolution of the province; lastly, on the second floor there are five other exhibition rooms, the scientific section and two sections of the Art Gallery, one of which derives from the donation by Iole and Alfonso Palladino.
There are many displayed objects in the various sections of the Irpino Museum of the Bourbon Prison of Avellino, among which that of Renaissance stands out, in which weapons, flags, medals, honors, clothes, military hats or part of uniforms and other relics that belonged to patriots and illustrious men of Irpinia are kept. There are also numerous paintings by many well-known local characters, including Pasquale Stanislao Mancini, Francesco De Sanctis, Giuseppe Zigarelli, Michele Pironti and his wife Giuseppina Mascilli, Carlo Poerio, Salvatore De Renzi and many others. There are also many documents of the time: newspapers, pamphlets, various publications, letters, mostly coming from the Provincial Library "Giulio e Scipione Capone", located inside the Palace of Culture of Corso Europa, another seat of the Irpino Museum.
The material collected in recent years in the Irpino Museum of the Bourbon prison of Avellino, enhanced through the use of the new multimedia exhibitions, has favoured the understanding of customs and traditions of Irpinia, in the various historical periods of reference.
