The Church of San Pietro (Saint Peter) in Guardia Lombardi is located in the Forche district, about 6 km away from the historic centre of the town of Irpinia.
The first religious building dedicated to the Holy Apostle was erected around 850 AD in the historic centre of the village, before the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. This sacred place took on great importance from a historical and cultural point of view, as it was the place around which the first settlement of today's Guardia Lombardi was established.
Later on, this church dedicated first to Madonna dell'Incoronata (Our Lady Crowned) and then to Saint Peter the Apostle, dating back to the beginning of the 20th century, was built on the outskirts of the town in the current location. The earthquake of 23 November 1980 did not spare the Church of San Pietro from damage, causing the roof and apse to collapse. The rebuilding of the sacred place included the extension of the architectural structure and the reopening for worship on 28 June 1993.
Today, the Church of San Pietro has a gabled façade, accompanied by an imposing bell tower.
